Hanger Clinic Notifies Patients of Privacy Incident at Kirksville, MO Patient Care Clinic

On March 31, 2020, Hanger Clinic learned that the storage facility utilized by its Kirksville, MO location improperly accessed its storage space and disposed of a number of boxes containing patient records.  The storage facility took this action without Hanger Clinic’s knowledge or permission. Upon learning of the incident, Hanger Clinic secured the remainder of the patient records and completed an accounting of all patient paper records for this clinic. The information involved for each individual varied, but may have included name, address, date of birth, date(s) of service, medical record number, treatment history, copy of driver’s license, prescription information, insurance information and Social Security number.

Hanger Clinic is committed to taking steps to help prevent something like this from happening again, including removing all patient records from, and no longer using, this storage facility. At this point, Hanger Clinic is not aware of any fraud or identity theft to any individual as a result of this incident, but is nonetheless notifying all impacted patients for whom it has a valid mailing address and have arranged for complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services for those individuals whose Social Security numbers were impacted. The notice will include information on steps individuals can take to protect themselves against potential fraud or identity theft. In general, Hanger Clinic is recommending that individuals regularly monitor credit reports, account statements and benefit statements. If individuals detect any suspicious activity, they should notify the entity with which the account is maintained, and promptly report any fraudulent activity to proper law enforcement authorities, including the police and their state attorney general.
