Scoliosis Orthotic Treatment Modalities: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (90)
Description
This one and a half hour introductory level course for PT/PTA, OT/OTA, RN, Case Managers and other health care professionals describes basic pathophysiology of scoliosis and its implications specifically for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). The instructor will review the names and distinguishing functional characteristic of various devices, as well as identify common full-time and night-time orthoses used in the treatment of AIS. Specific devices presented are: Milwaukee CTLSO; Boston-type TLSO; Wilmington Orthosis; Hanger’s Scoliosis Orthotic System; SpineCor Scoliosis System; Charleston Bending Brace and the Providence System. A more in-depth discussion on analysis of radiographs including: determination of skeletal growth; determining vertebral rotation; assessing scoliotic curve flexibility; and Cobb Method.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe basic pathophysiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and its implications
- Identify common orthoses used in the treatment of scoliosis
- Specifically compare various types of orthoses
- Differentiate the indications, advantages and disadvantages of the orthoses used or AIS
- Value the importance of multidisciplinary team approach in treating AIS
